On Saturday evening the Grade 1 listed Lovell telescope at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire became the dramatic backdrop to a concert by rock band The Flaming Lips. This choice of venue proved to be inspired as the band known for their ‘sci-fi’ based music used the dish of the radio telescope as a huge projection screen throughout their show. It struck me as poetic that this incredible 54 year old structure, built to “hear” radio waves transmitted through space was being transformed into such a colourful and beautiful object through the use of artificial light and sound.
