your project

We recently published a step-by-step guide on how we at Gibson Architects can help you extend or remodel your home. Download the PDF here, or drop us an email with your address and we’ll send you a copy free of charge.

As your architect we are there to walk you through every stage of your project, but we know that sometimes it can be reassuring to familiarise yourself with the processes before starting something new.

Depending on where you live, your Local Authority may have different policies, advice and guidelines, but generally the overall process remains the same.

So begin by finding your Local Authority or find a list of Greater Manchester Local Authorities here.

Manchester City Council also provides a list of Conservation Areas, so you can check whether your property falls within one, and how that may affect your project.

The Planning Portal also has lots of useful information, including guidance on:

whether you need planning permission;

the application process;

Building Regulations;

and Neighbourhood Planning.

The National Planning Policy Framework [pdf] is a new document that aims to condense and clarify issues such as planning and development, and it might be worth bearing in mind that some of the issues within it may arise during your project.
